It's starting to look like I'm going to have a very boring week now. Nobody cool is coming back until at least Thursday. My DS has been seeing a lot of play recently.
One bit of cool news, though: I got a new studio space that is both spacious and well-lit, which are two things my old studio space could not boast. As soon as my key card gets on the system, I am going to be working my butt off in there. I SWEAR TO IT.
And in more art-related news, I've been entertaining the idea of doing some more DBH submissions, so... I did. Here's one, I've got maybe two more in the works? We'll see. Just trying to loosen up and not take this crap so seriously, so I just draw what comes natural - one of which is angry looking heads.
Used the lionfish stencil on a shirt for Jon today... used some weird transparent fabric paint, the colors didn't really get as dark as I'd have liked, but I'm still pleased with how it turned out.
BONUS: quick little video of Kid Koala scratching Slayer's "Reign in Blood" towards the end of his set last night. I didn't realize he played stuff that heavy, so I took a little snippet before my camera batteries died.
And if I didn't mention it before, it was an awesome show. Moon River, Skanky Panky, Things You Can Do from Deltron 3030, and previews of his new project and "mosquito scratching style"... all in all, one of the best shows I've ever been to.
Spent all day yesterday (well, after work and minus the nap I took) cleaning out space at my dot com and working on re-designing my website. I'd say I'm about 75% - 80% done with the new design now, but I'm hung up on some gay scrollbar issue that screws up everything in Internet Explorer, so the last twenty-ish percent might be a while.
But I've got the splash page done, you can look at that:
www.chrkcheung.com/index_new.html
The other pages are going to look like crap cause I got rid of the corresponding css styles and images, so watch out.
I've named this layout ACTAEON... I'm sure I'll start hating it before I even finish it, my web-design skills are so weak.
So I'm at school complaining to a friend in my graphic design class about the guy pissing in my yard, and he tells me his own public urination story.. apparently he was at a pub somewhere in town last weekend and had got totally trashed with his friend. He suddenly gets this bright idea to piss on his friend's shoe as some sort of drunken joke. So they're sitting at a table, and he unzips his pants and starts peeing on the guy's foot. His friend, who I assume was more sober than he was, gets mad and gets up. But now, the guy is still peeing and he's so drunk and its such a big piss that he can't stop. So he's just sitting there pissing on the floor when the bouncer - who actually happens to be in our GD class - comes up and is like, "Dude, what the hell are you doing?" and he's like "Yeah, I know, man, this is embarassing..." but he's still sitting there pissing himself with the bouncer just standing there.
Long story short, he finally finishes up and leaves in shame, only to see the bouncer again in class Monday, and get embarassed all over again. I don't know, I thought it was funny.
I just officially closed up shop at my blog back at the dot com, I decided to stick with Vox for now. Kind of a big decision, I ran my own blog there for a little over three years, I think. But I've already explained my reasons for doing so, and I won't go into it again... too much typing.
Happy Halloween, everybody - I hope you had a good time; Mitch, Russ, and myself spent most of the night at Target Copy making covers for the Rhetorical Shotgun sample CDs:
What's the last thing you crafted, constructed or created yourself?
I am so proud of myself... lately I've actually been getting stuff done!!
I've mostly been doing stuff for Rhetorical Shotgun, the band my brother, my roomate, a friend from highschool, and his brother put together. ...basically there's no excuse to get out of doing stuff for them, and all I want to do when I get my degree is this kind of stuff anyway. Hell, the only reason anyone learns graphic design is to make some DAMN ROCK AND ROLL POSTERS GODDAMMIT
I'm almost done with the T-shirt design here... just have to get a consistent outline on the tentacles, figure out how I'm gonna use white in the band name, and decide on a color for the shirt. I definitely want to make a pink one in a girls cut, if the budget allows, and then decide between slate, royal blue, and olive for the guys / unisex. This is the coolest thing with tentacles I've ever drawn.
Got some sharpie paint pens yesterday on a recomendation from a friend, I'm gonna be doodling crap all over school. I have plans for a chubby little alligator guy... scratching his balls or some other slightly obscene antics. I think it's especially funny because FSU's rival is the UF Gators... and some people actually give a shit about this! Can you believe that!?
Also, I my favorite class right now is figure drawing. I've dreamed of taking a figure drawing class for years, and it's everything I've hoped for, basically. We just do drawings over and over and over. It's great - I think my anatomy is actually getting better, and it freaks me out! The only thing about it is (and not to brag, seriously) that I'm probably the best in the class, aside from the TA and the teacher... and everyone else is really behind and not taking it seriously, etc and its really bumming me out because I can't really hold a serious conversation with these people about drawing. I'd really like to find a group where I can hang out with people more skilled than I am, or at least on the same level, and maybe have a good discussion on technique or materials or philosophy, so I could actually learn something, you know, but most people here seem to just be taking the ride. I have found a few exceptions though, don't get me wrong, but the majority are really just not getting it. There's a dude in there who I swear joined the class just to see titties.
Going home real quick this weekend for my follow-up eye exam appointment. I really want to go see the new Jackass movie tonight while I'm there, too. Movies are so much better at the Rave.
Well, Saturday I ended up crashing out from two until eight, effectively wasting an entire day. So yesterday I decided to "ride it out" and stayed up all day after work. It worked out pretty well, and I got a nice eight or nine hours of sleep last night. Only thing was that during the afternoon, I was so tired I couldn't think straight. I went to Pac Sun to get a nice pair of sunglasses now that I have contacts, and I forgot to use the gift card I have left over from Christmas, and there was a 2 for $25 sale (I paid $20 for mine) and I only got one pair. What the hell, Chis - way to be a smart shopper.
I have homework to be doing right now, but instead I'm writing this and working on a poster for the November 2 Rhetorical Shotgun comeback show. I found out it coincides with The Day of the Dead, and I got a burst of inspiration. Still a work in progress (the show is 2 months off anyway) but I'm proud of it already. And its monotone and low on detail, so I figure we can take this down to Kinkos, bust out a hundred copies on the cheap and stick em up around Crestview, Destin, and Tallahassee.
Tried to keep it from looking like the Misfits logo (hard to do with a white on black skull)... I think I did alright. Thinking I might stick in some vines or something in the margins, to reinforce the dia de los muertos theme, and fill up space.
Vox is still alright so far... I'm hoping eventually they'll make it so you can use <img> tags and maybe some other limited HTML support. Especially if I'm going to eventually run out of hosting space for audio and images here, because I'm not signing up for a flickr account when I pay a hundred bucks a year for my own server. Right now you can only upload pictures from your computer or off of flickr or photobucket as I understand it. iStockphoto? What the hell. But I'm giving Vox the benefit of the doubt for the time being. We'll see what happens.
Point is, I'm not ready for the big switch from my dot com yet. If I give up on Vox, I'll probably just end up taking my old blog off the navigation at my website and letting it be my little secret.
